MY SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT REFLECTION REVIVE AND RECYCLE
MY SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT REFLECTION REVIVE AND RECYCLE

My Social Action Project, titled “Revive & Recycle,” aimed to promote environmental awareness and responsible waste management at Greenfield Girls Primary. The goal was to encourage learners from Grade R to Grade 7 to collect recyclable materials and understand how recycling contributes to a cleaner environment and a sustainable future. Through this project, I wanted to show learners that small actions like sorting plastics, paper, glass, and cans can make a big difference when we all take responsibility for our planet.

The school has decided to continue with the project permanently, as the recycling collection not only helps the environment but also supports the school financially — turning sustainability into a long-term goal for everyone.

Overview of Activities

The project ran over several weeks, beginning on 27 August 2025 and ending with a Grade 3 assembly on 29 September 2025. I started by visiting all the grades to introduce the recycling competition, explaining what can and cannot be recycled, and how recycling benefits both the school and the environment. Each class received recycling bags, and learners were motivated to participate actively. Throughout the following weeks, I:

  • Created and distributed a digital newsletter to inform parents about the project.

  • Counted, sorted, and recorded recyclables (plastic, paper, glass, and cans) brought in by learners because there was no scale.

  • Collaborated with the Green Team and coordinated with the recycling collector for scheduled collections.

  • Encouraged creative expression by helping Grade 3 learners create pollution awareness posters.

  • Announced the winning grade and celebrated their effort in assembly.

  • Assisted Grade 3 learners in preparing and presenting a pollution-themed assembly to promote continuous environmental responsibility.

Reflection on the Experience

This project helped me grow as a teacher, leader, and role model. I learned that successful social action requires planning, teamwork, and clear communication. Managing the recycling across different grades was challenging at times, but I stayed organised by keeping a log of collection days and working closely with both learners and staff.

One of the most rewarding moments was seeing how excited the learners became about recycling especially the younger ones who proudly brought their bags full of recyclables. Their enthusiasm proved that environmental education can be both fun and impactful when approached creatively.

Challenges and How I Overcame Them

The main challenge I faced was ensuring consistent learner participation across all grades. Some learners forgot to bring recyclables, while others were unsure about what materials were acceptable. To address this, I revisited classes to remind them, used visual aids, and explained again why recycling matters. Another challenge was time management, balancing teaching duties with the recycling project. I overcame this by setting aside specific days and times (during breaks or after school) to collect and record the recyclables. Learners couldn't present on the assembly because they had an outing so they already practice and the school said they can present on the 4th term.

Learning and Impact

This project taught me the importance of integrating Life Skills and environmental education into everyday teaching. Learners not only learned about recycling but also developed teamwork, responsibility, and respect for their environment. it also helped me grow professionally I improved my organisational skills, communication with different age groups, and my confidence in leading a school-wide initiative. The final Grade 3 assembly preparation was a proud moment seeing learners present confidently on pollution and recycling showed how much they had learned and how empowered they felt to make a difference, and it also showed how ready they are for the assembly.

My “Revive & Recycle” project was a success in raising awareness and inspiring action. It showed me that even small projects can create meaningful change when learners are involved and motivated. I feel proud of how I managed the project from start to finish and how it supported the school’s sustainability goals. Most importantly, it reminded me that as a teacher, I have the power to shape learners’ values and attitudes towards caring for their environment.
